The opening race was held at Qatar’s Losail International Circuit on March 20, 2016, where Movistar YAMAHA MotoGP rider Jorge Lorenzo stayed in first from start to finish.

Lorenzo was off to a great start from pole position, staying in the lead during the first lap. Although he did surrender his position once during the race, he reclaimed it in the 9th lap. Lorenzo then continued to open the distance between him and the other riders, crossing the finishing line 2.019 s in front of the second-place racer.
Fellow teammate Valentino Rossi finished the race in fourth place.
